About Me

Most of the people who will view this site already know me or know me through my family and friends, but for those that don’t….

Cassie in the Ross Sea, Antarctica 2017

I’m Cassie. Great, now you know me. Glad we got that over with.

Just kidding.

I’m originally from Dallas, Texas but moved to Seattle to attend the University of Washington (Dubs up!). After college, I moved to New Hampshire for work. My line of work is the ocean, but before you ask, NO I’m not a marine biologist. I do not study whales or sharks or dolphins. I map the seafloor.

Here are some fantastic videos you can watch that explain what that means:

However, these can be summarized simply with: we map the ocean in a number of ways, the most effective of which is sonar. This method measures the time it takes for a “ping” to travel to the bottom of the seafloor and back to the boat. These two-way-travel times correspond to depths (the deeper the seafloor is, the longer it takes for the ping to reach it and come back).  As we have mapped less than 20% of the world’s oceans, they remain Earth’s last true frontier (sorry, Alaska).

After working in the ocean mapping field for a few years, I decided to go back to school to get my M.Sc. in Ocean Mapping at the University of New Hampshire which I recently finished (woohoo!). Almost immediately after, I started my current position where I will be roaming around the world collecting bathymetry ( or depth information of the seafloor) on an exploration vessel for the next year. This means I will be traveling all over the world, collecting never-before seen bathymetry data of the seafloor, and getting paid to do it. Basically, I’m a modern day Jacques Cousteau. But in all seriousness, this job is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and I plan to share all my sea-going adventures with you .

I created this blog so you can follow along while I am at sea, mapping parts unknown! Please feel free to ask questions, comments, etc. I’d love to hear from you!
